Pushing the Boundaries - Understanding Composition

Whether a work is representational or abstract, composition is the structure that underpins both the drawing and painting. During the course students will carry out a series of experiments, which explore the possibilities of composition using colour, shape, tonal contrast and other spatial elements. There will also be discussions of works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Matisse, Bonnard, Fred Cuming, Sandra Blow and Fiona Rae. Students will then introduce lessons learnt into their own work. All materials necessary to complete the course are provided.
